Hohner Acoustic Guitar setup

Several years ago my wife purchased a Hohner acoustic guitar for me for Christmas. I use it mostly in the living room for private jams and practice. It has become a good companion for learning songs. I remember jamming “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” on it on New Year’s Eve 1999 as Y2K rolled in. Fortunately, we all survived.

A few years ago I replaced the strings with a lighter gauge in hoping that it would play easier. It turns out that the lighter gauge strings put less tension on the neck and it created some buzzing.

I brought the guitar to RockIt Guitar Repair and one of the things Ray noticed was that the frets had wear marks on them. The areas where the strings repeatedly hit the frets had worn small grooves or notches in the frets. This was certainly a contributing factor to the fret buzz that I was experiencing.

Ray did his magic on the guitar first my smoothing in polishing the frets. Next he treated the fret board with linseed oil which had never been done. He made a slight adjustment to the nut which allowed the strings to be seated better. He also sanded down the bridge just a touch to bring the action closer to the fret board.

Finally he put .12 gauge strings on the guitar which was the best fit for this particular guitar. They are still considered light gauge strings.

When I got the guitar back I noticed immediately the notes would ring out like they should. It played easier due to the lower action but also had a fuller and richer sound possibly due to the slightly heavier gauge strings that Ray suggested.

I'm looking forward to playing this guitar for many years to come. It will likely remain a living room guitar as I have others, but it is one that I enjoy playing because it helps me along in my guitar playing journey.
